BREAKING: DeJoy out as Postmaster General
Big news in the postal world. 75th Postmaster General of the United States and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Postal Service Louis DeJoy has announced his resignation on March 24, 2025, sources confirm.
Dejoy Resigns After Five Years atop USPS
It was a somewhat shocking announcement on Monday afternoon when 75th Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service and architect of the 10-year Delivering for America Strategic Plan Louis DeJoy announced that he would be stepping down. Though the departure was sudden, it was not entirely unexpected as the organization has been in the process of identifying a replacement since at least February.
“Louis DeJoy has resigned from his role as Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service, according to a source familiar with the matter. On Monday, he told the USPS Board of Governors that it would be his last day on the job. He named Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino to take over until the Board names a permanent replacement.
DeJoy’s departure comes weeks after he struck an agreement to allow Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to help the agency cut costs and remove bureaucratic red tape. Last month, he told the Board to start looking for a successor, ending a five-year tenure running the agency through the COVID-19 pandemic, three elections that relied heavily on mail voting, and the implementation of a dramatic restructuring.”
And in a USPS press release, DeJoy issued the following statement:
“After nearly five years as America’s 75th Postmaster General, and after informing the Governors in February of my intention to retire, I have today informed the Postal Service Board of Governors that today will be my last day in this role. I believe strongly that the organization is well positioned and capable of carrying forward and fully implementing the many strategies and initiatives that comprise our transformation and modernization, and I have been working closely with the Deputy Postmaster General to prepare for this transition. While our management team and the men and women of the Postal Service have established the path toward financial sustainability and high operating performance – and we have instituted enormous beneficial change to what had been an adrift and moribund organization – much work remains that is necessary to sustain our positive trajectory. I am confident that Doug will continue our positive momentum during the period when the Governors undertake the important work of identifying and selecting the next Postmaster General. I also have no doubt that the entirety of the Postal Service will aggressively shape its future and become more efficient, capable, and competitive as it continuously changes and improves to best serve the American public.
It is with great pride that I pass the baton to Deputy Postmaster General, Doug Tulino, until the Governors name my permanent successor. The Governors have hired a search firm in support of those efforts, which are well underway. I shall cheer on America’s 76th Postmaster General and the 640,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service who I have called my colleagues and friends for close to five years. It has been one of the pleasures of my life and a crowning achievement of my career to have been associated with this cherished institution, the United States Postal Service.”
USPS Board of Governors Retains Egon Zehnder to Lead Search
Alongside the resignation, the USPS issued another press release announcing that they have retained global advisory and executive search firm Egon Zehnder to lead the search for the 76th Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the USPS.
“The Postal Service plays an essential role in American life and, as we navigate a critical period of transformation and modernization, the Governors of the Postal Service are committed to ensuring strong and visionary leadership for the organization,” said Amber McReynolds, Chairwoman of the USPS Board of Governors. “We are confident that Egon Zehnder’s expertise will help us identify a leader who understands the Postal Service’s unique mandate and is prepared to advance our progress in service, innovation, and long-term sustainability.”
With no established timeline for the selection and announcement of the 76th Postmaster General, Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino has taken over as current acting PMG until a suitable replacement can be found and confirmed.
Tulino Takes Over as Interim Postmaster General
Update (FOX5Atlanta): Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino is expected to take over his duties in the interim while the Postal Service Board of Governors finds a permanent replacement.
And is Expected to Take on Keynote & PMG Town Hall at National Postal Forum 2025
Though yet to be confirmed, it is expected that acting PMG Tulino will be taking on the PMG Keynote Address on Monday April 28 and Postmaster General Town Hall on April 30 at National Postal Forum in Nashville.
The largest gathering of its kind, National Postal Forum is the only event that brings together all senior level USPS executives, leaders of the mailing and shipping industry as well as the industry’s major suppliers and partners. With over 4,200 attendees expected, it’s likely that the two events featuring acting PMG Tulino will likely see huge turnout.
If you were on the fence before, the recent changes have taken NPF from important to imperative. And while you’re there, why not make plans to attend our Director of Postal Affairs Leanne Herman’s workshop on Nonprofit Mailing basics, best practices, and cost savings opportunities?
Shakeups Continue—Robert Duncan Steps Down from Board of Governors
If the PMG departure news wasn’t big enough, a slightly less newsworthy yet also impactful change was just announced on Thursday March 27, as Robert M. “Mike” Duncan announced that he would be resigning his position on the USPS board of governors due to health reasons. Serving on the board since 2018, Duncan’s term was slated to end in December 2025. From the USPS press release:
Robert M. “Mike” Duncan, one of the Governors of the United States Postal Service, today announced that he is resigning his position on the board of governors due to health reasons. His resignation is effective immediately. Duncan has served on the board since August 2018 and was chairman from September 2018 to February 2021. Duncan’s current term on the board was set to expire this December. A copy of his letter of resignation can be found here.
“My fellow governors and I are grateful to Mike Duncan for his service to this Board and to the Postal Service,” said Amber McReynolds, chairwoman. “In 2018, Mike was tasked with reestablishing the Board’s governance and operations after it had gone more than a year without any presidentially appointed governors. His leadership and vision for the Postal Service have played a big role in our efforts to create long-term sustainability for this critical organization.”
“Mike Duncan’s business and political acumen was a great asset to the Postal Service during a period of historic transformation,” said acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino. “He has been an important leader for the Board, and Postal Service leadership is happy to have had his counsel and insights during this critical time.”
